NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course

Description

Unlike the other basic courses, the Personal Protection course covers defensive shooting. Self-defense is a topic somewhat distinct from the regular diet of shooting fundamentals, it can cover mindset, legal issues, decision-making under pressure, and planning for the worst. The Basic Personal Protection in the Home course is designed around the use of the defensive pistol.

Although the course can be completed as quickly as eight hours, the amount of information presented, and the probability of intensive question and answer sessions on the included topics, makes it likely that the course will take longer.

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook and intensive lessons on basics of defensive shooting, issues of self-defense, and other strategies for protecting the home and family.

Course Goal
“To develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense.”

NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home Course Lesson Plans
Lessons

  1. Introduction to Defensive Shooting
  2. Basic Defensive Handgun Skills
  3. Firearms and the Law: Possession, Ownership, and the Use of Deadly Force
  4. Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation
  5. Selecting a Handgun for Personal Defense
  6. Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities
  7. Course Review and Examination

Prerequisites

Participants in the Personal Protection course should be experienced shooters, showing mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling. If necessary, this course will put partcipants through a pre-course evaluation exercise, where potential students are asked to demonstrate safe gun handling, shoot a series of five-shot groups, discuss the operations necessary to zero a pistol, and demonstrate how to properly clean a handgun.

Participants are expected to show validation of shooting experience by showing an NRA Basic Pistol Course certificate, an NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program certificate, a Pistol qualification card, a DD 214 card with pistol qualification, or a Concealed Carry Permit.

Finally, the Personal Protection course is intended for mature law-abiding adults, who have the mindset and seriousness necessary to properly perform the activities in the course. Self-defense is not a topic that lends itself to horseplay and distractions.

Course Completion

Students will be given feedback on their shooting exercises, and a certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Not only are shooting standards fired during the practical exercises, but a written exam will be given at the end of the course. Throughout the course the instructor will use a individual checklist for each student to ensure the coverage of course material, and satisfactory absorption of the material being taught.

Discounts are available to groups, call for dates.

Concealed Carry Weapon Training (meets CA requirement for permit)

Should you be so unfortunate as to be involved in a violent confrontation one person will be injured down on the ground and the other will be walking away. Your choice in this is simple, which one do you choose to be. Due to the live fire portion of this class it is taught one on one.

In a violent confrontation you ARE NOT in a competition, there is no scorekeeper, there is no winner. One person walks away maybe and the other does not. If you are looking for a CCW card to impress your friends or to feel invincible on the freeway, please stop now and look elsewhere because this is not what we teach.

If you just want to go to the range and fire rounds down range with a bunch of other people, this is not the course for you. Here at LFT we are going to impart to you the skills, the training, to walk away from a violent encounter, one way or another, whereas the other person(s) involved will not be. You will not be in a large group and will receive the one on one focus of the instructors. We never have more than two students per instructor.

If the cost of a course is the driving motivator in your decision, just like buying the least expensive handgun is/was, we are definitely not the course for you. However, if you and your families safety is your reason for carrying concealed, this training will give you the skills to achieve that.

On the other hand if you are looking for the skills and training that may someday be required to save your life or that of an innocent person, we will impart that to you through an intense and thorough study of the use of deadly force. We do not guarantee that you will pass this course and in order to get our certificate of qualification, you will be required to pass. Passing this course will not guarantee that the issuing agency will permit you to carry a concealed weapon.

If you are serious about not being a victim, this course is for you whether you obtain your CCW permit or not.

Violence is simple.
How simple is it?
We can answer that with two more questions:
  1. How can untrained people prevail? And

  2. How is it that untrained people can prevail over trained people?

It is all in the weapon used; the one between your ears, either you have it or you do not.

Please email or call today for the specifics of your CCW Course and to reserve your space.

Awareness, Avoidance, Defense - On-Site Home Evaluation

Awareness means having the ability to recognize real or potential threats as well as the proficiency to anticipate the unfavorable conditions that are conducive to an attack. It is our responsibility to become well-informed about our own surroundings.

Avoidance is the next step in our protection plans and unfortunately the one we fail to act on most often. Many assault victims report feeling hinkey (strange or unusual) just prior to an attack. Whether through planning or intuition, we should be able to be aware of potential threats and avoid them. For example, driving through a rough part of town increases the likelihood of problems occurring. We may know this but chose to take the risk out of convenience, rather than take a safer route.

Firearms are our last line of defense. Just having one in your home is not enough.

Do you have the proper mindset, attitude, knowledge and skills to use a firearm? Can you shoot effectively in the home? Do you know the law? Deadly use of a firearm has long-term ramifications. Are you prepared for the aftermath?

Our certified instructors will visit your home and perform the following:

  • Evaluate your home for potential weaknesses to threats

  • Provide a crime report/demographic profile of your city

  • Recommend solutions on averting the risks including "safe rooms"

  • Assess your home for gun safety and recommend solutions

  • Educate you on the proper mindset and attitude on firearms defense

  • Educate you on the ethics and legalities of gun ownership and use

  • Identify threat scenarios and train for proper reactions

This is one of the most valuable investments you can make for home security. The price for the AAD Home Evaluation is based on the size of your home starting at $295. Contact Liberty Firearms Training for rates.

Introduction to Defensive Marskmanship (avail. on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday)

There is a primary difference between target/range shooting and defensive shooting, one is done in a very controlled and somewhat stress free environment and the other is not.

While the fundamentals of pistol shooting work well in those controlled environments most of those basic skills if not committed to muscle memory are out the window in defensive use situations.

Competitors know that through many hours of training their trigger finger goes on autopilot the second the buzzer sounds. Many are unsure if they see their sights instead focusing on the target and the smoothness of their actions.

This four hour shooting class is designed as an introductory course in defensive shooting marksmanship skills.

Skills covered:
Presentation from the Holster
Flash Sight Picture
Rapid Fire
Recoil control
Adequate Sight Picture
Speed Draw
Firing under stress
Rapid Fire Accuracy
Point Shooting

Prerequisites:
Participants in this course should be experienced shooters, showing mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling. If necessary, this course will put partcipants through a pre-course evaluation exercise, where potential students are asked to demonstrate safe gun handling, shoot a series of five-shot groups.

California Handgun Safety Certificate

Description

Handgun safety is the law in California. Every handgun owner should understand and follow handgun safety practices, have a basic familiarity with the operation and handling of his/her handgun, and be fully aware of the responsibility of handgun ownership.

In order to obtain an HSC a person must pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) written test on handgun safety. The test is given by DOJ Certified Instructors at Liberty Firearms Training.

To obtain an HSC a person must take the Department of Justice (DOJ) written test and receive a passing score of at least 75% (the information necessary for passing the test is contained in this study guide, Handgun Safety Certificate Study Guide).

An HSC is valid for five years from the date of issuance. This service is currently only offered to students in our classes. All LFT Instructors are DOJ certified for this class.
